Whenever Medha Pakhtar name pops up, Narmada river flowing in Western India comes to our mind. Such is the impact she left behind in last 25yrs for the Anti-Dam Mass Movement,Narmada Bhachav Andolan (Simply NBA). Even after quarter century went by, still justice to the rehabilitation villagers is at sluggish pace that hardly 10% of the affected were allotted land by the Government. This shows the apathy of the Babus in implementing the land reforms to the landless farmers.
As a 10yr old kid , i grew up watching the controversy surrounding the dam and measures to stall the rise in height which might put many villages in submergence zone in near future. Although the Andolan movement was a failure in securing the land to the affected ones, but this spearheaded other anti-government land procurement methods... Never such an event juggled with non-violence was held after the days of the Gandhi on the Indian Soil. Sometimes i wonder, whom does the bureaucracy work for? Many villages are at stake and significant loss is unavoidable had the high dam falls apart..Although i averse their stand, the blatant actions along with lack of political will shocks me to the core, and pushes me into a dilemma.
People like Mrs Medha spend their lives in taking this message forward to fight for the rights of the common man in this lawless system. Maybe its time we either join the bandwagon in going against the illegal actions or move on as a silent spectator amidst in a crime scene. Guess later suits comfortable for most of the white collar citizens who shy away from social reformation, indulging only in currency revaluations. I tend to support for a cause which bring smile on thousands they rightly deserve. Hope this andolan turns noisy and disturb the sleep of our so called leaders in finding a resolution soon..
