Pleasure or Closure?

Its November, and once again we empty our pockets to buy crackers to burn for what? No one hardly remembers the reason we even celebrate this festival anymore except the sight of flower pots! Well i was no different few years back, where my sister and i meticulously used to divide the entire pack my dad bought between us . And not to forget my mom made pencils which were the best weapon to my neighbor costly rockets ah ah ... Those were the best days where we wait for diwali not only for new clothes but also bunch of holidays in the winter to relax ourselves after our Mid term exams.

Since i joined college, much of the desire to celebrate is lost out of moral introspection for the need of such a feast. No doubt every penny i spend on the crackers goes to the thousands who depend on this business for their daily bread, but is this the best we can offer to support their families.Accordingly to the last year numbers, around Rs100 Crores is spent on these stuff across the country to seek pleasure for 3-4 days. And still less than half of our population live under BPL surviving to merely not to perish. Such weird figures baffles me if i can afford to spend money on something so worthless in the name of religion, why can't i  donate the same to an orphanage or a NGO .. Not so easy to digest the reality, but few do this and they inspire us to do more. So this year, i was happy that i pooled in my savings to local NGO rather than shopping for some crackers. Although my contribution is small, maybe it might bring cheers to those kids in someway on this special day..

I always wonder, why do we celebrate these festivals.. But the real reason is to identify our most cherished wishes and put a name to satisfy our material needs. Like buying new clothes, buy some jewelery etc ... Well i am sure , the real happiness lies in what you intend to do on this day rather than what the world speaks about.
